Daniel Green, local hero, picked to represent all Cub Scouts in America
SILVER LAKE: An 8-year old Summit County boy who saved the life of a girl while swimming last summer is now the face of heroism for all Cub Scouts.Daniel Green, a second-grader at Silver Lake Elementary and son of John and Carolyn Green, is the only Cub Scout among nine Scouts picked as delegates to the Boy Scouts of America’s annual Report to the Nation.Daniel and his mother are traveling to Washington, D.C., today for the event. They will visit the White House, the Capitol, the Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Pentagon, the U.S. Secret Service, Arlington National Cemetery and the Goddard Space Flight Center in outings through Thursday afternoon.Daniel was on a floating dock at Silver Lake on July 16 when he saw a little girl in the water screaming and gasping for air.Daniel, who was the only Cub Scout in his den to pass a Scout swimming test a week earlier at Camp Butler in Boston Township, jumped into the water and rescued the 5-year-old girl.The Report to the Nation, which summarizes the organization’s achievements of the previous year, was established in the Boy Scouts charter in 1910. Along with Daniel, delegates are one Venturer, one 1st Class Boy Scout, one National Sea Scout, one Life Scout and four Eagle Scouts.In the fall, Daniel was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Honor Medal “for his quick thinking, bravery and selfless concern,” said Marisa Giller, BSA National Council spokesperson.“His new [swimming] skill came in handy.” Daniel is only the third Scout in the Great Trail Council’s history since 1914 to be a delegate to the Report to the Nation, said James S. Shimko, the Great Trail Council’s program director.Excited about tripCarolyn Green, 42, said Daniel is getting over a cold, but is excited about his trip.“It is almost mind-blowingly exciting,” she said. “I can’t quite fathom it, really.”Daniel, a Wolf Cub Scout, said he is most excited about the possibility of meeting President Barack Obama.
